UGC NET (National Eligibility Test of the University Scholarships Commission)

Age criterion:

  • Junior Research Fellowship: no more than 28 years old on December 1st
  • Assistant Professor: No age limit for Assistant Professor

Educational qualification:

  • Candidates who have obtained a minimum of 55% in their Master’s degree or are appearing in their final year

Exam performed in the months of: June and December (exam takes place twice a year)

Notifications announced in: For the June exam, the notification will be announced in March and for the December exam, it will be in September.

Examination model: objective in nature

Preparation time: a minimum of three to six months is recommended

What is the UGC NET exam?

The National Eligibility Test is a national examination conducted in India by the University Scholarships Commission. This test allows graduate students to qualify for university-level teaching positions in India and also to apply for admissions to doctoral programs.

The test makes sure that a candidate qualifies for the minimum standards in the teaching profession and research. It is conducted in the following streams

  • humanities (including languages),
  • social sciences,
  • Management
  • computer science and applications and
  • HR


Established by the Union Government in 1956, UGC is a statutory organization, which is responsible for coordinating, determining and upholding university teaching standards. It is the organization that gives recognition to Indian universities and distributes the funds they need. UGC has its headquarter in New Delhi and has got 6 regional centers in Bhopal, Pune, Kolkata, Guwahati, Hyderabad, and Bangalore.

Career Options Once You Have cracked UGC NET

Once you clear the UGC NET entrance exam, you will be eligible to become a lecturer or seek a Junior Research Fellowship in top colleges & universities. Vacancies are advertised from time to time on various portals and you have to keep chacking for the same thing.


Once you crack NET, you can request a job of lecturer when universities advertise vacancies. Although the cracking of the NET exam is a mandatory criterion in many colleges and universities, the final appointment will depend on the quality of the interview conducted by the university in question.

Junior Research Fellowship

Junior Research Fellowship is for those who actually have the heart to search. You become eligible for the Junior Research Grant if you requested it in your application form and subsequently published NET. Once you are selected, you can continue your research at any prestigious university and obtain fee reimbursement. In some universities, students are even admitted directly into MPhil programs.
