Master of Commerce

M.Com is a postgraduate academic degree which is awarded after successful completion of a two years program. The Master degree course covers the study of principles of accounting, economic theory, micro and macroeconomics, money and banking systems, knowledge about business, trade and its characteristics and policies involved, etc.

What is M.com?

M.com is a specialized course that prepares a person for a career in the financial sector and companies. The course lasts 2 years and each year consists of two semesters with different subjects based on the thesis and research according to the program of the university.

The Master of Commerce typically requires two years of full-time study. The curriculum is generally concentrated on one subject area, see aside, and emphasizes underlying theory. Relatedly, programs usually include a thesis component, and may be exclusively research based.

Given this structure, the MCom differs from other business and management degrees:

  • Its concentration on one area distinguishes it from generalist degrees, such as the MBA. Some universities offer the MCom in general management, although this is more similar to the Master of Management than to the MBA.
  • As compared to specialised Professional degrees – such as the Master of Science in Finance or Master of Accounting – the MCom places more emphasis on theory; see also Master of Science in Management.
