About NID

The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) is a premier institution for fashion education in India. Established in 1986, it has played a pivotal role in shaping the fashion industry in the country. NIFT was granted statutory status in 2006 by an Act of the Indian Parliament, and it operates under the aegis of the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India.

Here are some key points about NIFT:

  1. Establishment and Pioneering Role: NIFT was set up in 1986 to cater to the growing demand for professionals in the textile and apparel industry. It has been at the forefront of providing quality education in the field of fashion.
  2. Statutory Institute: In 2006, NIFT was conferred with statutory status by an Act of Parliament. This recognition solidified its position as a leading institution for fashion education in India.
  3. Campuses: NIFT has established full-fledged campuses across the country, ensuring accessibility and a widespread impact. These campuses are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities to provide comprehensive education and training to students.
  4. Visitor and Governance: The President of India serves as the ‘Visitor’ of NIFT, symbolizing the institute’s national significance. The governance structure includes a Board of Governors and Academic Council, responsible for overseeing the functioning of the institute.
  5. Professional Human Resource Development: NIFT has been instrumental in producing skilled professionals for the textile and apparel industry. The institute focuses on imparting practical knowledge and skills to its students, preparing them for successful careers in the field.
  6. Knowledge Service Provider: Besides its role in education, NIFT has also been actively involved as a knowledge service provider to the Union and State governments. This includes contributions in the areas of design development and the promotion of handlooms and handicrafts.

  8. Handlooms and Handicrafts: NIFT’s involvement in the positioning of handlooms and handicrafts showcases its commitment to preserving and promoting traditional craftsmanship. This aligns with the broader goal of supporting indigenous art forms and skills.

In summary, NIFT has not only been a pioneer in fashion education but has also played a crucial role in shaping the textile and apparel industry in India.
